Northern Defence Affairs is a publication produced by Mellenion, a Nordic strategic research and advisory company. We focus on Russian military behavior and capabilities. Our aim is to clarify Russian strategic thinking, inform decision-making, and keep readers up to date on key developments in Russian military affairs.
Our work draws on more than two decades of combined experience across research, academia, and the military. We bring deep expertise on Russian military affairs as well as Nordic, Arctic, and Eastern European security. We work on Russian-language sources and interpret Russian military behavior and capabilities, providing clear assessments for the international audience.
Northern Defence Affairs is written for decision-makers, researchers, analysts, early-career professionals, and serious observers who seek a deeper understanding of Russian military affairs. Andreas Turunen is an experienced researcher in Russian security and defence matters. His principal areas of expertise include air power and strategic doctrine, with experience in assessing military capabilities across all operational domains. He currently works at Swedish Defence University (FHS) in Stockholm and is a Co-Founder and Partner at Mellenion.
